Sandbags, sandbags and more sandbags...
Last week I stitched sandbags and sandbags galore! I was responsible for our Miss Kitty's quilt guild meeting last Thursday evening and we had a "Progressive Make It & Take It Project" night!
Everyone or just about everyone made a thread catcher with a pincushion to set beside their sewing machine. It was a little crazy with everyone running around cutting, stitching, pressing and stuffing, but loads of fun! Something we will have to do again!
We had a cutting station for cutting the pieces. Then a sewing station for sewing the bag together. The pressing station for pressing what needed to be done. Then the stuffing station for inserting the sandbag into the cover, which is the reason for the 45 sandbags I made.

So now that you've used the 45 sandbags, are those going up for sale? LOVE the pink one you show in your blog.
I've been promising myself for weeks that I'll make one of these. The template I've seen uses a ceramic tile which I've been very reluctant to use as they are obviously very easy to break. I much prefer the idea of using a sandbag... will definately give it a go now that I know what I should be using :-)
Actually, Deborah, I will be offering the pattern with instructions for sale in the next month. I tried out the directions on my quilt guild to make sure they were understandable and am making a couple of changes and then will upload the pattern for sale. So you can be looking for that in the next month. I'll announce it on my blog when I get it uploaded. :)
They are fun and easy to make and of course it is helpful to have more than one, you know.....the sewing machine, serger, ironing board, cutting table...:)
I am sitting here laughing so hard! I started reading this post and looked at the picture of all of the sandbags and could only think that you were saving up for a "rainy" day! The size escaped me and I thought "what a great community project, but where did you put all that sand in your sewing room?" LOL!!! I had never seen a thread catcher bag weighted like that. The ones I've seen fit under the machine and always get in your way as you're trying to stitch. This is wonderful! Thank you, Serena! (Note expeditious use of exclamation marks!)
Donna,
It is actually raining here today, but we've never had "enough" rain in western Kansas to ever have a flood!
Good question...that would be A LOT of sand to put in my sewing room!!!!
Yes, gotta love those!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)
What a great idea--wish I had thought of it!! :) I'm sure sometime I will have to give it a try, too. Morgan's Mom
